Ascent Trip Report

Climbed Mt. Israel via the Wentworth trail. There is plenty of parking at the Mead Base parking area an it is all well signed. The lower part of the trail is very gradual. It never gets too steep. The forest if very wide open with lots of interesting rock walls and streams cutting all around. About a half mile in the trail will get slightly steeper and follow a stream up hill. One it cuts to the right it will stay moderate for a bit, then take a sharp left. This is about a mile in, and that's when it gets steep. Even at it's steepest this is still a very moderate hike. A little over about 1.5 miles in there is a very short spurt trail that has a nice view over Squam lake and the surrounding area. Press on from here and the woods start to get much thicker with evergreen. You'll start to level off for a bit, then a quick climb and you get to an open area that seems like the summit, but is not. Great views starting here of the Sandwich range. The trail from here descends shortly, levels off, then climbs back up and meets the Mead trail. The summit is just a bit further down a spur trail. Amazing views. I read, but did not see, that there is a trail that goes a bit beyond the summit carin and opens up to views farther east than what you see from the summit. It was the first very cold hike of the year for us. The summit was in the mid 20s but much colder when you factor in the wind chill. The trail up was dry with only one small icy patch easily circumvented. There was snow along the mostly flat trail across the summit, but not deep by any means. This was a great easy hike, and I would love to get a look at the lower forest in the summer time with more leaves. I'm curious if it's as wide open when the trees aren't bare.
