We'll be starting from Route 4 a little Southeast of Rangely Lake and hiking the AT. Over the next 4 nights and 5 days, we'll tag Saddleback, The Horn, Abraham, Spaulding, Sugarloaf, South Crocker, bushwack to Redington, and back on the AT to Crocker North. Next stop is the road crossing of Rt 16 & 27, where we will have staged a car with some supplies. Then a short distance to a shelter for the night. Next day we climb the Bigelow mountains, West Peak and Avery. Then back down and back to civilization.
If there is any interest in staying another day or two, we may camp out at a camping area on Flagstaff lake, which is a hop skip and jump from the Bigelow mountains.
We are going up Friday night, July 6 and will spend the night in the area.
Day 1: Meet at AT trailhead on RT 27/16. Stage a car and then drive back to Route 4 AT trailhead. Start at 2000' and ascend 2000'+. We'll hike past Piazza Rock Campsite, up to Saddleback (4120) then over to The Horn (4041). We'll descend 1000' and spend the night at Poplar Ridge Campsite. Total for the day 11 miles.
Day 2: Start by descending 1000' then climbing over 2000'. We'll take a side trail to Mt Abraham (4050) then descend 1000' to Spaulding Mountain Lean To. Total 11.5 miles.
Day 3: Start at Spaulding Mtn Lean To, a little above 3000' and climb Mt. Spaulding (4010) and then head over to Sugarloaf Mtn (4250). We'll go down 2000' and up 500' before camping at Crocker Cirque Campsite. Total 9 miles.
Day 4: Start at Crocker Cirque climb 1500' and tag South Crocker (4050) bushwack to Mt Reddington (4010) bushwack back to AT and South Crocker. Next tag Crocker Mtn (4228) and then head down to Route 27 and rendezvous with one of our cars. Total 9.5 miles. Drive to Maine Hostel and have a hot shower, and spend the night.
