Ascent Trip Report

Drove 0.8 mile north of Rattlesnake Summit on Hwy 101, and took a right onto poorly signed Spyrock Rd. First mile was paved, but then became well-graded dirt road that is good enough for passenger vehicles. The summit of Iron Peak with it's lookout tower will come into view as you drive up the road. At 4.5 miles on Spyrock Rd, there is a right turn onto unsigned Iron Peak Rd. There's a sign at the beginning of Iron Peak Rd indicating this is a private road for local residents only (but there is no gate). If you choose to continue, hopefully with some sort of permission, it's another 1.5 miles to the turn-off for Iron Peak. With only 0.7 mile of road left now to the summit, there's a gate at this junction with a "No Trespassing" sign. The summit and lookout tower are visible from here, but the tower's windows were boarded up. Not sure if this meant the tower is not used anymore, or if it's closed for the winter. Usually, lookout towers on peaks are open to the public, but not this one. I suppose it's meant to keep out vandals and thieves.
