Ascent Trip Report

This is a long but relatively easy ridgewalk with a couple of riddles to make sure you're paying attention. Round trip 6 miles from the trailhead at VA 613.

At the start, you need to be wary of the Appalachian Trail, which is shown on the topo following the ridge halfway to White Rocks. The AT has since been re-routed and veers to the SE at Wind Rock, just 0.25 miles from VA 613.

Leave the AT here and follow the unmarked old jeep trail along the ridge of Potts Mountain. At 0.6 miles from the trailhead, you'll pass the footings of the old Stony Creek Lookout Tower, which is actually the high point (4128) for Wind Rock. Then the trail descends gently for almost 2 miles to a gap (3800) SW of White Rocks. Scramble up the cliffs on the R side for fine views to the SE. One of these outcroppings may mark a corner of Monroe County WV.

Continue up the unmarked but fairly obvious path to the not-so-white outcropping atop White Rocks. Here is the other riddle. Where does the Craig-Giles boundary meet the Monroe line? There's no stake or other evidence that any of the three counties have surveyed the spot. In fact, the Craig-Giles line is marked as an "Indefinite Boundary" on the topo, so any debate by COHPers is probably moot. My GPS agreed with Fred Lobdell's finding that a pointy rock about 100 feet S/SE of the summit could be the Craig COHP. I trampled a lot of ground to satisfy myself that I had covered the Craig COHP--my 30th in VA and 108th overall.

This is hunting land, so wear orange if you're here during deer season.
