Ascent Trip Report

Although Savage Mt. is located on state game land, most of the territory between the game lands and the highway (Pa. 96) is privately owned and posted. After disappointment at a couple of gated and well-posted tracks or private forest roads, I met a couple of local hunters who were scoping out access routes for hunting season (next week, I think). They showed me the access road for the game lands, up what they called Shaefer Run Rd., but is listed on my map as Tiger Valley Rd. It starts in the village of Hyndman, right where the highway jogs left (heading south). It winds around through a beautiful area to a large parking lot in a field. From there I headed up an abandoned portion of the road to a spot 0.45 mi. west of the hp coordinates where the road headed down and away from the coordinates. From there it was a medium difficulty bushwhack; not a lot of thorn bushes as on many other Pa. hills but some pretty thick underbrush. On the way down I headed east from the hp with much less underbrush and then intersected with an abandoned forest track. A better route than the one I followed upward.
