Ascent Trip Report

July 29, 2012
I started down the Ward Brook Trail with Kaerstin (Lil-Yeti), Gudrun (Red Goat) on a somewhat chilly morning. At 7:45am we were at the junction of the Calkins Brook trail as the sun started poking through the trees. The morning is a bit cool, but by now we have warmed up pretty well.
8:30am. We reached the ‘Donaldson herd path’ and now the climbing starts. At the first crossing of the Calkins Brook there are sleeping bags and tents on both shores of the brook. Certainly not the required distance from the trail or the water source, gee I hope we didn’t wake them as we went by. The path is much drier and much less “rooty” then the herd path up Seymour we used a couple of days ago. At the half way point we are feeling good and the slope isn’t that steep ‘yet’.
10:30am. We reached the trail that connects the summits of the 3 mountains. We quickly reached he summit of Donaldson at 10:40. The Red Goat was going her own pace and joined us at the summit at 11:00am. We had some great views while we relaxed and had lunch. The view over to Seward looks tough and we really can’t see Emmons from our current vantage point.
At 11:10 Lil-Yeti and I start our trek toward Emmons. The Red Goat decided she would rather just enjoy the views from Donaldson while we summitted Emmons.
12:00pm Lil-Yeti and I arrived at Emmons. The hike over was pretty slow going, kind of wet but since this summer has been so dry I guess I shouldn’t complain because I assume it could have been a lot worse! Although it is a nich sunny day, we don’t stay long as we still need to get to Seward before calling it a day. But we did take some time out for a quick snack and while Lil-Yeti was snacking, she was almost attacked by a mountain mouse! But once it got a crumb it scrambled back to its hiding spot.
12:10pm. Left the summit of Emmons and we were back on Donaldson at 12:55pm where Gudrun was still enjoying the views. We all headed off Donaldson together, but at the Junction of the Donaldson HP, the Red Goat decided to head down while Lil-Yeti and I headed over to Seward.
When we were looking at Seward from Donaldson earlier, it looked like it was going to be a fairly difficult hike, but for some reason it went quite smoothly, easier than the hike to Emmons. It surprised both Lil-Yeti and myself that we had reached the summit of Seward at 1:55pm. Although the weather is great, the treeed summit offers no rewarding views, so after a quick snack and drink we head off the mountain at 2:05pm. We made it back to the Donaldson herd path at 2:55 pm. We caught up with Gudrun just before the crossing of the Calkins Brook crossing. We refilled our water, cooled off our feet and took some family pictures before heading down the Calkins Brook trail at 4:30pm.
We had a nice easy walk along the Calkins Brook Trail and were soon at the Ward Brook truck trail at 5:20pm. At 5:45 pm we were back at the lot. It was a great hike, Lil-Yeti is getting awfully strong and I am beginning to have trouble keeping up with her today!
