Ascent of Fish Lake Hightop on 2012-10-21| Date: | Sunday, October 21, 2012 | | Ascent Type: | Successful Summit Attained | | Peak: | Fish Lake Hightop | | Location: | USA-Utah | | Elevation: | 11633 ft / 3545 m |
Ascent Trip ReportThis hike would have been more scenic (with leaves changing color) and warmer had I done it a month or so earlier. It was still enjoyable. One could have driven a normal passenger car further than I did- definitely to 9800', perhaps to 10,500' if aggressive. I stopped early to get some extra hiking. A real 4x4 probably could have gotten as close as the road did up to 11,400'.
The road hiking was easy enough, and the little bit of off-road hiking at the end started trivially enough, but the last 50-100 vertical feet provided a bit of route-finding challenge as there were plenty of boulders/boulder-walls to get around. The summit was clearly marked with a 5-foot-tall wooden structure.
When I went, there were dozens of hunters up in the area- so bring orange if you go at that time.
