Ascent Trip Report

After a dawn ascent of Einödriegel in horrid conditions I drove the 40 minutes to the Grosser Arber. There is a small cabin cable car which takes you from the car park at about 1050m to the top station just below the summit. I had planned to hike it but the weather remained rubbish, so I took the cable car. Day parking cost 2 Euro in 2012, with 1 Euro refund to those who use the cable car (which then cost 10 Euro instead of 11 return). There was actually snow above about 1200m, but the well made path from the top station to just below the summit was trivial to follow. The last few meters were up slippy, icy gneiss rocks to the giant wooden cross adorning the summit. There was no one else stupid (or obsessed) enough to be up there in such bad weather. I returned the same way and the entire enterprise lasted less than 10 minutes.

I returned swiftly to Munich just after midday due to a combination of motorway with no speed limit and high powered rental car...nice ;-) in plenty of time to start my regulatory affairs training course, happy to have been able to do something productive on a morning which would otherwise have been wasted.
