Ascent Trip Report

I did this with Dick and Darrin as part of the FlagsOnThe48 project. It was a great and moving experience. As we were driving up, we expected it was going to be a miserable day of hiking. As we passed through Franconia Notch, we hit very think fog and heavy rain. But by the time we reached the trailhead, weather was great.

I started up early because I'm so slow while Dick & Darrin waited for the rest of the FOT48 crew to start up. It was an easy climb and I hit the peak about 5 minutes before D&D arrived with two pieces of the flag pole. Disck set up a memorial banner from a FDNY firehouse that lost many on 9/11. We all signed the banner. The rest of the crew reached the top and we proceeded to put up the flag. Darrin's flag pole skills were invaluable in getting the flag up and keeping it up through the great gusts of wind that battered us.

We had the flag up from 10 - 2. At 1 PM, a Blackhawk helicopter flew over and a photog took our picture.

At 2, we struck the flag and banner. I took one part of the flagpole down the mountain for an uneventful descent.

I think this is the easiest of the 4K's.
