Ascent Trip Report

This was simple hike up the standard route from the east side. It was special, however, as it was my daughter Trisha's 54th and last fourteener. My brother came along, despite being out of practice for climbing, to help her celebrate. We had no trouble driving the road all the way to the gate at 12,000 ft. We found many braided trails heading up to the ridge. Cut up and to climber's right as soon as possible, and avoid the direct route to the prominent mine ruins directly ahead. The ascending traverse leading there is rocky and loose. The longer but gentler road route leading around to the north is much better. The ridge was steeper and narrower in places than I remembered it from 19 years ago. But the trail is well-worn and the route goes pretty quickly. Although a bit windy at times, the weather was sunny and mild. However, huge amounts of smoke from fires in several states, including Colorado, impaired breathing and made all views murky.
