Ascent Trip Reportnice day and a nice hike. started bright and early and headed up the fire road since the ski lift wasn't running yet, and because that would be cheating. made it to the notch in quick time, and took a brief break (they have fantastic iced tea i have enjoyed...more than once) and then headed up the devil's backbone.
took a brief detour and headed up the scree slope to the summit of hardwood, and then made back down the scree to the main trail.
continued on up the backbone to the summit, and took another quick break before heading off to west baldy, where there was absolutely no one. the trip is only ten minutes or so each way; i have no idea why more people don't head over!
anyway, we had finished all three summits, and headed down the ski hut trail so we could make a nice loop. got some water from the spring, and right below that, we saw a HUGE bighorn, the first one i've seen locally. it had an absolutely massive rack, and i got some great pictures of it; it was no more than ten feet away from me.
it was an absolutely magical experience that i will probably never get to repeat.
after that, we continued on down the trail and made it back to the car in early afternoon, and back to the o.c. in plenty of time for an early dinner.
extra gain includes reascending baldy from baldy / west baldy saddle @ 9840.
