Ascent of Mendon Peak on 2012-09-21

Date:Friday, September 21, 2012
Ascent Type:Successful Summit Attained
Peak:Mendon Peak
    Elevation:3840 ft / 1170 m

Ascent Trip Report

My hike started short of Brewers Corner because the Wheelerville Road Bridge crossing Eddy Brook was closed to auto traffic. I began my walk passing over the bridge meeting a grader coming my way which sent me east on to a woods road alongside the brook leading to Forest Road 650 (Catamount X-C Ski Trail & Snowmobile Rte #7). When these other trails went south (M2), FR 650 continued straight on and then by switchbacks up to a loggers clearing. The road continued across as a fresh logging road to a gulley crossing by bridge of heavy wood plank. At just over two miles when this road made a turning descent (M3), an older still wide and clear logging road rises southeastward toward summit. This road deteriorated to a point (M4) about 500 yards below peak to where it jogs west (even to a dead of wood block) then back, all this not too obvious, to a well beaten herd path slanting up eastward (I only learned this on my descent quite short before reaching my GPS Waypoint back onto road). I would explore this area for the herd path with its orange surveyor's tape before proceeding, otherwise the easier bushwack is to the east through steeper, yet more open terrain (my descent) while to the west (my ascent) the travelling is thicker to the point of a crawling circling bushwack to finally reach the summit. Mendon Peak does frankly offer views in its herd path convolutions. On reaching back down to the fresh logging road, I was able to jog the two miles back to TH in half an hour. Next hiked Aitken State Forest and Bald Mtn's looping trail vistas for leisurely views even to looking back up to Mendon Peak.
