Ascent Trip Report

A trail hike ..... 5 miles, 3h00 hours RT.

The signed TH Parking is located on North Road 1.4 miles west of Hwy 6&15 (4.9 miles north of downtown Greenville). There is an information board at the TH but no mention of distance, I estimate it at 2.5 miles.

The blue-blazed/well-used trail climbs westerly (moderate) to the old/dilapidated Fire Warden Cabin, then steeply to the ridge (450 stone steps) where it turns right and stays on the ridge (moderately steep) northeast to the summit ...... 2 sheds with solar panels and antennas plus the old Tower Foundations, the first Fire Tower in the USA was built on this summit in 1905.
The clouds moved in as I summited robbing me of the view, it was windy and cool so I didn't stick around.

The trail continues/descends 70 yards passed the summit to a new construction site presently in progress. Already built is a large concrete slab (20' X 40' X 6' high on one side) with a wooden building and a large galvanized steel structure for Solar Panels. To one side is a large hole (30' round X 7' deep) with a rock drilling machine ... a lot of rock anchors are near-by. I believe this is for a tall Tower. All sorts of equipment on site, such as compressors, small bob-cats, vibrators, saws, steel, porta-potty, etc.
Being involved in construction most of my working life I have a great appreciation/respect for the tough people on this project ...... on top of a mountain with no access road ???? pretty impressive work.

After having dinner in Greenville, getting a few groceries and calling Rose I drove to the Baker Mountain TH for the night. They are forecasting rain into the morning, not good.
