Ascent Trip ReportKatahdin.
This mountain has been my nemesis since I was about 15. After 3 failed trips to make it back to Baxter, I finally made it in this weekend.
The weather was great, cloudy, a bit humid, buty good views. Then, I turned around once we got to the Gateway, and a gray cloud was staring me down. So we booked it to the top in a hail storm, tried to run out to Hamlin, gave up halfway because some of the guys got super cold, and went back down.
So, instead of car camping and bagging North Brother the next day, I spent the rest of my time at a friend's cabin on Sebec lake and with my grad school friends at UMaine.
Hamlin is 2 miles along a ridge, almost Due North of Baxter. Easy terrain. Katahdin Stream trail is 5.2 miles to the Baxter summit, of which about over half is above tree line. Be prepared for weather 2 months colder than sea level. So, for those of you trying to do the two in a day, it's like 13.8 round trip and maybe 5000' vertical on the day. So, half a presi traverse. You can do this!
There's also the Knife's Edge, Chimney Pond, etc... So I'm kinda glad I'm forced to go back :)
Remember, peak baggers... there's more to the wilderness than the highest point on mountains. The weather for this one was kinda a huge blow to the face because it almost ruins my shot for finishing the 115 this year, but on second thought, pressure is now off... I'm going to space out the remaining 25 peaks over the next summer as well, spend more time fishing, swimming and drinking in the woods. Deadlines are arbitrary, prominince is arbitrary, elevation is arbitrary, but the woods are always fun!
