Ascent Trip ReportKreuzjoch is the highest point on a large area of high ground to the north of the Gerlospass. It is not a peak to command superlatives, being somewhat boggy, lumpy and covered in the paraphernalia of the ski industry. It is nevertheless a fine viewpoint for the section of the main Alpine chain between Hochfelier abd Gross Venediger. Of the various possible ascent routes, the one least scarred by ski lifts is probably that up the south ridge from just west of the Gerlospass. For those (like myself) who are in more of a hurry, the Rosenalmbahn cable car shortens the ascent considerably. I drove south about half an hour from our family hotel on the Achensee down the Zillertal. The valley station of the Rosenalmbahn is located on the eastern edge of the pretty village of Zell im Zillertal and runs approximately June to October. The cost in Sep 2012 was Euro 16.20 return to the top station.
From the top station the route is fully signposted (path #10), and zigzags through forest and between chairlifts. Higher up, look out for the original path, sections of which still exist, and which is much more attractive to follow than the gravel access roads for the ski buildings. At Übergangsjoch (2507m) the last skilift is left behind and the last few hundred meters of ridge narrow attractively to the summit with the usual large cross. Patches of recent snow were still lying, and to the south, the northern slopes of the larger peaks were dusted with icing sugar. The jagged ridge of the Reichenspitze showed up attractively amongst the many 3000m+ peaks visable. The descent was very quick on the ski roads and the round trip took around 3.5 hours.
