Ascent Trip Report

Part two of a day hike trip in the Snake Range to summit several LVMC 50 Classics. Sequence was Bald, Wheeler, Jeff Davis, Wheeler, and Baker (both summits). Car shuttle was set up in advance.

This trip up Wheeler was much easier than my previous summit in early July 2011. For one thing, I was in much better shape, and had no sense of elevation effect anywhere during the hike. For another, the snow which blocked the trail last year was absent, with only a thin film in one corner of one of the summit wind shelters being the only noticeable trace. Descent was along the ridge down to Jeff Davis. It offers spectacular views of Nevada's only glacier. I have heard the route described as Class 3 elsewhere and think that is ambitious. There is some light scrambling among some boulders here and there, with zero exposure. Use of a quick hand here and there, sometimes two, but not what I would consider climbing. "Class 2+". Route down from Wheeler is steep in places.
