Ascent Trip Report

I ran a Cross Country race in the morning in Redding and came to Lassen to climb Brokeoff Mountain before heading back home. Unfortunately I spent too much time in Redding after the race and didn't get to Brokeoff until much later than I wanted. the trailhead is just south of the southern park entrance, but I drove in through the northwest entrance and all the way through the park to get there. By the time I started I knew it was be dark when I finished.

The trailhead was easy to find and on the way out I passed the only 2 other parties I saw the whole time who were just about back to the trailhead. The trail goes through several types of landscapes on the way up. A lot is forest, some open space, some streams, and the top was mostly rock with a packed down sandy trail. the trail was mostly single track, pretty constant the whole way. It never got steep enough to be difficult.

The trail climbs up the east side so it was especially dark until I wrapped around the south side and got to see the actual western horizon. I did this just in time to see the sun set although when I got to the top there was still plenty of light.

I didn't spend much time at the top so I took a few pictures and left. About 1/3 of the way down I started to use my cell phone as a light to see the trail. I had no problem finding the way in the dark although I was glad to get back to the car because I don't like the thought of animals being out there - specifically mountain lions or beans. it turned out I didn't see a single animal out there, friendly or otherwise.
