Ascent Trip Report

We reached the Fourmile Creek 4WD trailhead around 6:00 and began our ascent, armed with nothing more than a verbal description of the standard route. We passed Dauntless Mine and its associated rubble (which were very interesting to look at), but due to the existence of a vast array of pseudo-trails in the valley of Sherman's southeastern side, we ended up scrambling a class 3 route south of the Hilltop Mine, rather than taking the traditional route (you only live once).

From there, our ascent followed the standard route. Unlike our last climb, Mt. Bierstadt, there were significantly fewer parties on the mountain, which cut our time greatly. There was a little bit of residual snow on the ground, but it was mostly distant from the trail until we reached the last quarter of the trail. The biggest inconvenience was the wind chill, though we were prepared and brought gloves and face guards.

At the summit, either I'm crazy or the summit log was missing. Nevertheless, a group that arrived while we were eating our sandwiches had a sign that read "Mt. Sherman / 14,036 ft. / 9-15-2012" so we could take photographic evidence that we did indeed reach the summit. Because we would lie about that.

The descent was incredibly rapid. We stopped briefly to investigate a small cave just up the trail from Dauntless Mine, though it turned out to extend only a couple dozen feet into the earth.
