|Date:||Sunday, August 1, 2004|
|Ascent Type:||Successful Summit Attained|
| Elevation:||8681 ft / 2645 m|
Ascent Trip ReportStarted from Crystal Lake in the Big Snowy Mountains south of Lewistown. Hike Forest Service trail to top of Snowy Mtn ridge, take left at trail junction, (eastward). Hike across Snowy Mtn ridge top eastward and across Knife Blade ridge to the three-way trail junction at base of Greathouse Peak. This spot is just east of Kife Blade where one trail descends to Half-moon pass, and another descends down thru Cottonwood creek to the north-northwest. At this spot, one can look and follow a pathway right up to the summit of Greathouse Peak, which is the high spot of the Snowy Mountain ridge. After resting and eating some lunch on the summit, fighting flies, I descended back the way I came to Crystal Lake. This makes for a long hike, 20+ miles, but the top of the Snowies is mostly flat. The majority of the elevation gain and loss is the first 3 miles of trail from Crystal Lake.
