Ascent Trip Report

Gained a little respect for the Appalachian trail. Seeing as I only hiked 16 miles worth and was fully spent at the end of my day hike, it was awe inspiring to consider that the trail extends another 1972 miles to Mount Katahdin from Newfound Gap. The last two miles of ascent were fairly tiring. I had the fortune to summit on a very clear day, so the views were nice. A very serious looking bicycle rider rode all the way up the concrete ramp to complete his hill climb right about when I got up there.

On this route to Clingmans Dome, there are very few opportunities for views along the way, but I suppose that is probably true of all the trails in the area. There is a clearing at Mt Collins and a small one at Mt Love along the way, but otherwise you are pretty much in tree cover.

I was chagrined to discover that my expectation of a modest eating facility at the top was not true, and my vision of enjoying an ice cream cone was not to be realized. There was not even a drinking fountain (was removed two years ago, according to the ranger), so I ended up shelling out $2.88 for two liters of water, with the comfort that it was going for a good cause. As my legs were a bit wobbly from the ascent, I hiked back along the road (avoiding most of the steep part of the trail) for about 2 miles before I came to a place where the road is relatively close to the Appalachian trail, where I then bushwhacked back to the trail, and enjoyed relative peace and quiet again, though the road is still often close to the trail.

Saw four hikers on the way up, zero on the way down.
