Ascent Trip Report

The northern side of the Summit Lake cirque is steep and spectacular. Of course, the 14ers that are not cluttered with parking lots and paving are not as beautiful as those in the wilderness but then again, it is good to have easy to access opportunites to the mountains and this is certainly an easy to access place and heavily used at this time of the year.

The most remarkable memmory of this climb was when we were passed by three Austrian/Germans. We had climbed up a class 1+ to 2 section of trail and we were at about 13,600 feet when all of a sudden we heard the voices of three German speaking men scrambling up the side of a wall (off trail) wearing blazers and work shoes. Work shoes? I guess they were at work or somewhere and descided to just try out an American mountain to compare to those back at home in the Alps. By now, K and I were breathing pretty hard and my pulse was up to 110 and hers was at 160. 13 hours in Denver and we have a lot more acclimating to do!

The peak is nice and affords great views of Evans and of Beirstadt. Beirstadt is impressive as a sharp pointed pyramid in the distance. You could see Gray and Torreys in the background. K was doing fine. Slow but steady. She said, "I know I can make it - let's do Evans."

So around the cirque we traveled and we would see how she liked her first 14er.
