Ascent Trip Report

A late afternoon start to my hike up the Jay Range ended in a torrential downpour shortly after I made the first summit; for me, the JOY of this hike was the time I'd hoped to spend rambling on the ridge between the range's various summits. Alas--I wisely retreated before getting caught on an exposed ridgeline during powerful winds and blinding rain. Even my glimpse of the summit ridge from the 1st sub-summit was enough to get my feet dancing for my next attempt on the mountain. Perhaps next spring...

The new(ish) trail is really quite easy to follow--some early yellow blazes quickly give way to sporadic blue trail markers. These aren't really necessary; the trail is well-trod despite the relative unpopularity of the peak. The new trail is FILLED with switchbacks so elevation gain is moderate throughout, despite the 2000+ feet of climbing required to make the summit. The trail IS a bit monotonous until the summit ridge is attained. For the few minutes views were available, they were expansive in all directions; the view towards the principal summit of Jay was pulse-quickening. Beautiful!
