Ascent Trip ReportMy old college buddy Roger and I (both 58-ish) climbed West Spanish Peak 9/07/12. Left trailhead at Cordova Pass at 6:30 AM. A pleasant hike in the woods til we reached treeline (and gigantic cairn). From there is was pretty slow going up the ridge to the top. We took a couple of sit-down breaks and summited at 9:40 AM. Though there was ground haze, the view was still spectacular. The radial ridges running out concentrically through the "plains" below are amazing. We checked out the three highpoints on top - we didn't have GPS, and each time it looked like the others were higher (whichever one we stood on). The registry was on the western one, so we took our summit photos there.
Started down at 10:30 AM, still concerned that a storm could blow in. Reached the giant cairn at treeline at 11:40 AM, and back to the trailhead at 12:45 PM. We had the mountain to ourselves - didn't see a soul until we met casual hikers when almost back to the trailhead. Weather cooperated - a lovely day and a great climb. Also recommend La Veta Loco (in nearby La Veta - duh) for a victory libation.
