Ascent Trip Report

Anji, Austin, Collin and I, along with Joseph K and Sashi drove to the trailhead for Toiyabe Dome to camp following the Arc Dome ascent the day before. The road passes a closed gate, and is pretty bumpy but mercifully short. The end of the road featured very little in the way of level, brush free, smooth areas to pitch tents, but we made do as best we could.

The next morning Joseph and Sashi decided not to try Toiyabe Dome, and instead slept in and told us they would meet us at the trailhead/campsite for the next day's planned ascent of nearby Mount Jefferson.

The four of us headed up the rough trail that started where the road petered out, eventually leading to the wall of cliffs we had seen driving in earlier. Once at the wall, a very steep, loose chute lead up, with Collin in front. As Austin began to follow, Collin started a remarkably large rockfall, in spite of taking care not to. Austin displayed practically ninja-like moves and almost unbelievably escaped injury. Anji and I, having seen enough of the chute, elected to climb the nice Class 3 walls just to the right of this shooting gallery instead.

Toiyabe Dome is just a steep Class 2 hike up to a ridgeline, gaining some 3800' in 2.3 miles from the wall. But it is quite steep getting from that wall to the ridge! There is a herdpath that basically leads all the way to the ridgeline from the top of the wall, and from there the path is obvious. We all made the summit after 5.5 hours of some pretty rugged hiking, and Collin took a nap after eating lunch, while the rest of us took photos and talked.

I decided to tag the nearby southeast summit while I was up there, but found no takers to go with me. In just 4 minutes I jogged down to the saddle between the two peaks.

See the trip report for Toiyabe Dome-Southeast Summit for the next part of the trip.
