Ascent Trip ReportGot to Crater Lake early before the boats were on the water to photograph the lake while the water was still. Hit the Mt. Scott trailhead at 10:40am, beautiful day, clear skies and mid-80's by afternoon. Hiked with Allison (wife) and William (6-mo. old son in backpack), and we stopped for lots of photos on the way up. Two hours to summit. Trail is well travelled and maintained, not too steep. The trail provides stunning views of Crater Lake and the surrounding area -- Mt. McLaughlin, the Three Sisters, Mt. Thielson, Bachelor Peak, Broken Top, and several other peaks in southern Oregon are clearly visible. On a clear day, Mt. Shasta would be visible as well, although the haze from the California wildfires was hanging in the air on this particular day, so we couldn't see Shasta. The best time to be on this mountain would be at sunrise for views/photos of Crater Lake. There is an old lookout tower on the summit, which is interesting. We hung out on the summit for about 45 minutes, then hiked back down in about 1 hr 15 mins. Returned to trailhead at 2:40pm. Highest point in the park, well worth the climb ... best view of Crater Lake, in my opinion.
