Ascent Trip ReportI had 5 days to drive from Medford OR to Lake Tahoe and wanted to climb as many PCT County high points as possible on the way. I did Mt. Eddy late on Monday and wanted to go through Lassen NP on the way, even though the Lassen Peak trail was closed for construction. I had decided to hike up Brokeoff anyway, but when I stopped in McCloud for fuel I checked the Lassen website to see if the fires would cause me any problem, and under 'current status' it showed Highway 89 through the park as closed. I stopped again in Old Station to see which was the best way to get to the south entrance, as that, and the Brokeoff Trail were supposed to be open. I called the park and found out that the road had actually opened the day before but the website wasn't updated yet. By the time I got through the park and to the Brokeoff TH it was 5:30 so I decided to wait until morning. I asked at the North entrance station if it was OK to park at the TH overnight and was told yes, so was planning on spending the night there in my truck camper, but a ranger came along and said it was prohibited. He said I could park overnight at the visitor center so moved there instead. Just before going to sleep I was reading the park brochure and realized that I was supposed to pay the camping fee, which the ranger didn't mention. I also realized that the Lassen Peak Trail would be open on Friday - Monday, but I didn't want to stay that long.
Sure enough, in the morning I had a notice to pay the $7 fee (half price with Senior Pass) so went and paid that, then back out to the TH, which is outside of the entrance booth, but inside of the park boundary. I also overslept so didn't start the hike until about 9:30 am. I only saw 1 other person leave ahead of me, and there was only 1 other vehicle in the lot, but I met a man coming down, maybe he was camped at the campground and just walked to the TH. Total time was 2:52 RT, including 10 min. on top.
After coming back down, I stopped at the entrance booth to see if it would be possible to hike the Lassen Peak trail after the work crew finished on Thursday afternoon. I had seen them arriving at the parking lot at 4:30 pm on Tuesday when I stopped there to look at the mountain on my drive through the park. Amanda, a very nice Ranger, said it should be open after work on Thursday, as they normally removed the barrier on the way down even though it didn't officially open until the next day. She said if the barrier on the trail was opened, I could go up without any problem. However I didn't want to wait around for a day and a half, so I drove down to Quincy to hike up Mt Ingalls, with the idea of returning on Thursday for Lassen Peak.
The second of 6 PCT county high points this week.
