Ascent Trip Report

Parked at the snowplow turnaround on rt.3. Hiked to the cabin, passed the cabin and 2 suberu outbacks and continued along the road, staying left at the intersection and headed left uphill along the snowmobile trail. at some point the trail splits again, the steeper option goes right and up to the top, the other option goes around the back but ends in the same place. I went right heading up the steeper stuff. Reaching the plateau of Bearpen I continued to near the opposite side intending on returning to the last junction via the low route. But upon reaching the far side of Bearpen I encountered a bear. I made some noise and he ran in the direction I intended to go. As soon as he ran his way I smartly turned around and walked back the way I came. After returning to the cabin I easily found the trail to Vly and began my climb. Although technically a bushwhack, This is not a bushwhack, the trail is very well defined and easy to follow, not overgrown at all. I could see how this route would be very hard to follow in the fall or winter. It roughly follows some light blue blaze paint right to the canister. I signed in and returned to my car the way I came. Surprisingly I thought the climb of Vly was longer and more challenging than BP.
