Ascent Trip Report

Completed a one-day Mahoosuc Traverse on the AT from Grafton Notch to Gorham. Holy cow - it was tough! The climb up to Old Speck was fine - not much different than what we have in the rest of the Whites - but the rest of the Mahoosuc trail was RUGGED. The endless steep ups and downs were tiresome - none of them were long, but they just prevented you from getting in a rhythm and getting your speed up. The famed Mahoosuc notch was pretty cool - huge boulders and a crazy route up/down/around/through. A challenge - but fun. Glad we didn't have to do it with overnight packs.
The open alpine meadows and endless views were a real treat. Some amazing landscape on either side of Goose Eye.

Water sources were an issue. Water was sketchy and running real low by Full Goose Shelter. Stopped again at Gentian Pond Campsite to find a stagnant, brown pool. Held off until we found running water a little while later.

Legs were really tired by Mt. Success and the last 10-12 miles were a struggle to maintain our pace. But we finished in 15:03. Proud of this accomplishment. This hike is not to be underestimated. WOW!
