Ascent Trip Report

The last couple of road trips I have begun with the highest peak on the itinerary. That wasn't a big deal in Box Elder Co., UT the previous week, as the hp is a drive up.

Here, a different story. I was not at all acclimatized and the going was very slow above 8000'. I held to my usual pattern of a very rough first day, followed by rapid improvement.

I started very late (4:00pm) and saw 7 people in 2 parties on their way down as I climbed. After that I had the mountain to myself.

Awesome views of Lassen, which I climbed in 2011. Hung out at the summit for 20-30 minutes. A large fire was burning to the west (and others nearby) and views further afield were obscured by haze.

If you don't have a pass you can self-register at the trailhead with cash or continue just a few minutes down the road to the park entry, which also accepts cards.
