Ascent of Blanca Peak on 2012-08-24| Others in Party: | BMS 914 Tim Newman Hannah Wilner Tim Vavla
| | Date: | Friday, August 24, 2012 | | Ascent Type: | Successful Summit Attained | | Motorized Transport to Trailhead: | 4x4 Vehicle | | Peak: | Blanca Peak | | Location: | USA-Colorado | | Elevation: | 14345 ft / 4372 m |
Ascent Trip ReportThe road up was very rocky but manageable for decent drivers/vehicles up to about 9,000'. Technically, the first "JAWS" obstacle isn't until about 10,500', but the road until then isn't easy.
Plenty of great camping spots can be found around Lake Como. From there, the road continues about another 500 vertical feet, at which point in turns into a trail. It is easy enough to follow in the daylight, but places in the boulder field get tricky to follow during alpine starts.
The final stretch up to the ridge and following the ridge has some basic class 3 (which may be able to be avoided with class 2 workarounds), but it can get very tricky if conditions are cold and wet as the rocks can get an icy coating.
