Ascent Trip ReportRich had climbed Darwin 2 years prior, but did not do the summit block; Rich wanted to go back and "really climb the peak" this time. From North Lake, we hiked up the trail to just past Lower Lamarck Lake, then followed an occasional use trail up to Lamarck Col. From the col, the use trail disappeared, so we made our way cross country down sandy slopes to Upper Darwin Lake. From the lake, we followed the canyon down to Darwin Bench, staying on the north side of the lakes, then found and followed a use trail down to the John Muir Trail. Rich and I followed the JMT southward, and camped at Evolution Lake.
The next day, Rich and I headed east from the lake to the peak's West Face, then follow a series of chutes to the summit plateau. We made our way over to the edge of the plateau, dropped down and traversed around the right side of the summit block to its southeast side via a couple of chutes, the first one going down a short distance and the second one going up, then climbed an easy crack to a ledge, then mantled onto the summit. We had a rope, but did not use it. After signing the summit register, we reversed our route and made our way back to Evolution Lake.
On day three, we hiked out.
