Ascent Trip Report

This was a dayhike via the peak's Northwest Ridge Route from Whitney Portal. Rick, John, Matt and I hiked up the trail to Meysan Lake, then went up a chute to the plateau located between Mount Mallory and Mount LeConte, which required an ice ax and crampons. Once on the plateau, we made our way over to the base of the summit rocks, dropped down a little bit, then ascended around and below the right side of the peak's northwest ridge on ledges to the peak's upper northwest chute, then we scrambled up to the summit. This route bypassed the Waterfall Pitch, but nonetheless required a rope to repel about a 20' high, class 4 dropoff located along the way. On the return, the climb of the class 4 pitch was done using a top rope since we had left the rope and protection in place. Once back on the plateau, our group climbed Mount Mallory via Green Pass and the peak's class 2 south slope, then returned to the vehicle at Whitney Portal. Also, trip stats include ascents of both peaks.
