Ascent Trip Report

This was a Sierra Peaks Section trip led by George Toby and Jim Farkas. On day one, the group backpacked from the Birch Lake trailhead to Birch Lake, and set up camp at its northeast side. The next day, the group day hiked around the south shore of Birch Lake southwestward to the top of the moraine shown on the topo map, then climbed up The Thumb's southeast slope to the summit, which went class 2-3. Afterwards, we dropped back down the peak's southeast slope to about 11,800' in elevation, contoured across a moraine eastward and then climbed up a gully on the west side of Birch Mountain to the peak's west ridge, which we followed to the summit; the route went class 2-3. Later, the group returned to camp, then backpacked out to the vehicles. Trip stats include a ascents of both peaks.
