Ascent Trip Report

This was a Sierra Peaks Section trip led by Larry Tidball, Barbee Tidball and Tina Bowman. We backpacked in from Mineral King over Glacier and Black Rock Passes, which provides a one day route into the Big Arroyo. This was my third attempt to climb Black Kaweah, and I finally made it! From the base of the Southwest Face, we climbed up the right hand chute about 100', crossed over to the left-hand chute on some ledges, then followed the chute diagonally up to the summit per Secor's guidebook. The route is class 3 with a fair amount of loose rock. Larry had to spot me as I made a high class 3, exposed move as we traversed across the ledges. Our group was fortunate in that we were able to sign the original summit register from 1924, which was only about 2/3 full. The summit register and cast aluminum California Alpine Club register box were apparently stolen from the peak in 2010 or 2011.
