Ascent Trip Report

This was a four day backpack, starting at Onion Valley and ending at the Baxter Pass trailhead. On day one, we backpacked from Onion Valley to Sixty Lakes Basin. On day two, the group climbed Mount Gardiner via its class 4 Northeast Chute Route. From Sixty Lakes Basin, we made our way into upper Gardiner Basin, then followed a class 2 chute to the peak's south summit, the start of Gardiner's knife edge ridge. Daryn set up a rope and belayed us down a short section of exposed rock, then we made our way along the knife edge ridge and over to the high point without having to use the rope again, even on the return accross the knife edge ridge. Mount Gardiner is rated class 4, but it seemed easier than the rating. I finished the Sierra Club's Sierra Peaks Section list on this peak. Our group ran into John Hooper just below the summit, who also finished the SPS list on Mount Gardiner. This was kind of a double list finish for the both of us. On day three, the group (except me) climbed Mount Clarence King, and on day four we backpacked out to the Baxter Pass trailhead.
