Ascent Trip Report

Started out at 6:45 am at the Loj trailhead. Took the Van Hoe trail to Marcy dam. Because the bridge was out, was re-routed around to the new bridge. Passed the Dam and took the Avalanche Pass Trail. It was very muddy due to recent rain. Very dramatic approach to Avalanche Lake. At the Lake the it was spooky quiet but beautiful. Passed the trap dike with waterfall up Colden. Maybe next time we'll try it. It took about an hour to go around the lake, cross over to Lake Colden and find the MT Colden trail head. Started the ascent at 10:15, reached the summit at 12:15. A 2 hour climb. Very steep, with a lot of mud. Most of the ladders were washed out. Looked like we were the first ones up. Soon afterwards, I was sitting by the balanced rock and heard voices. It was 2 guys going up the trap dike. At the top, the views faded in and out with the mist. Ate lunch and then started down. Passed several parties going up on the way down. Made it down to Lake Colden in 1 hour. Next stop Algonquin Peak via Lake Colden trail.
