Ascent Trip Report

Erika and I went to Crater Lake National Park for the first time. We wanted to do a single mountain climb that wouldn't be too difficult, but not too easy either. Based on the round trip distance and what the terrain looked like we figured Mount Scott would be a good choice. The fact that Mount Scott is the highest peak in the park was another facvtor we considered.

The trailhead was very easy to find. There are spots to park along Rim drive northwest of the mountain. the mountain looked daunting from the parking area because the slope facing us looked like an unclimbable due to steepness and loose rock that wouldn't slide under our feet. Fortunately, the actual trail goes straight south and around the mountain counter clockwise and and the approach to the summit is actually from the south.

We started up the trail and it was easir than I thought it would be although my opinion was not agreed to. Erika wanted to take it easy because she hadn't been training due to injury and I would have liked to push the pace to use the climb as rtaining. We settled for somethign in between.

We passed a couple other parties, one of which said they made it up in 50 minutes. We were skeptical beacuse they didn't look as fast as us and 50 minutes up a 2.5 mile steep slope seemed about where we though we would be. As we got to the top, Erika agreed to pick up the pace a little and we made it in 41 minutes, I think largely due to the distance being short. My watch showed we traveled only 2.18 miles.

We didn't spend much time at the top because it was a little chilly up there and we wanted to go see other things in the park. On the way down we took a small detour to check out a small rock outcropping. About a half mile from the bottom I picked up the pace and ran back to the car and Erika came in a little after me. I think the whole trail is runnable, I could probably run to the top without stopping.
