Ascent Trip Report

This was a trip that started with a night at the Timber Creek campground, then a car shuttle to the Berry Creek drainage to head up to South Schell. The plan was to climb South Schell, then traverse the ridge all the way to North Schell, then descend to the waiting vehicle.

The trail from the Berry Creek drainage was faint and overgrown in places, but soon dumped us into a valley with its eastern wall where we were making for. Climbing up this wall to South Schell proved to be the crux of the hike: a steep ascent of some very loose scree, including a nice quarter mile of bear-crawling up the slope to gain the ridgeline just south of the summit. Once up to South Schell, we took a break and awaited the rest of the party, then pressed on to the north toward the next peak (Taft).
