Ascent Trip Report***Sierra Club Outing***
led by me and Jim Fleming
3-day backpacking trip up Fish Creek Trail to Fish Creek Saddle camp. After setting up camp, water for the weekend was collected from Lodgepole Spring located 0.75 miles and -650' west of camp and above Dry Lake. Good flow in stream from Spring.
Pack up to Fish Creek Saddle Camp on good Fish Creek Trail. Set up camp, good well defined use trail to Grinnel Mtn. Grinnel is a vague summit up there; one of several rocky cairns were assumed to be summit. Water from Lodgepole after returning from peak.
Day 2: Good trail from Fish Creek Saddle Camp to jumpoff for Bighorn Mtn. We took the second well defined gully from the Sky High Trail, it is sandy on its west side, down onto The Tarn and then climbed straight up onto the Bighorn ridge at the low point on its ridgeline. From Bighorn we descended the way we had come up and then traveled west from the Tarn to Dragons Head. Very well defined use trail to summit of Dragons Head. From Dragons Head we ascended cross country back up to the Sky High Trail and then on to San Gorgonio. At the junction with the San G trail and Sky High, Jim and Winnette continued on to Jepson Peak, while the rest of us (minus Spisak) continued on to San G. Rain and lightning on summit; we aborted going for Jepson and Dobbs and instead headed back to camp.
Cross country from Fish Creek Saddle Camp to summits of Lake Peak and Ten Thousand Foot Ridge, then back to camp to pack up and out.
