Ascent Trip Report

We came to this County for the Abitibi HP and the near-by Mont Video, of the 2 climbs Mont Video is perhaps the more interesting one, however the best views are at the HP. This TR covers both mountains, summited in the order listed below.

From Val-D'Or we found our way north on #379 to the village of Barrate (approx 50km).

MONT VIDEO ...... 1km, 35 minutes RT.
This mountain has a unique geological formation, with the north slopes having a small ski-resort and the south side more or less a vertical wall down to Lac Roy.
At the east end of Lac Roy is Camping Mont Video, a popular spot with a sandy beach, campground and hiking trails. The shortest route to the summit of Video is from this Campground and is the one that I took.
From the intersection of 379/1er Rue Ouest in Barrate, Petro Canada Station on corner, we drove south on 1er Rue Ouest 1.1km to where Chemin Mont Video starts on the right, we took Chemin Mont Video west for 11.8km (pass entrance to Video Ski-Resort) to the Camping Mont Video on the right. We went to the information office for a free trail map.
From the office it is .3km north (through the campground) to the base on the mountain, 80 meters before the road end, on the left is a sign "Plage et Interpretation". This is the TH.
I followed the Sentier de la Montagne north as it climbs (210 steps) the steep wall .4km to the summit .... capped with 2 Communication Towers, 2 ski lift stations and an Observation Platform.
The HP is the rock outcrop between the Platform and the Communication Tower, GPS 48.41493,-77.78179, a BM "Geodetic Survey of Canada" embedded in a short concrete pedestal is unreadable.
Great views of the whole area.

PIC 472 (Abitibi COHP) ....... .7km, 30 minute RT.
***8 NB: As of July 2017 this peak is no longer the Abitibi COHP, the new COHP is now Mont Brumeux-Sommet Est in Parc National D'Aiguebelle (see its TR).
From the entrance to the Camping Mont Video (above) we continued west less than 100 meters, where Chemin Mont Video turns left, and stayed straight on Route Lithium for 2.3km to a left onto a gravel road. Parked the van, this was my TH.
The gated gravel road climbs .4km to the summit ...... leveled flat for the Communication Tower construction, I chose my HP just outside the fenced-in Tower's northwest corner, GPS 48.40969,-77.81187.
The summit offers a super 360 degree panorama, Mont Video dominates to the east.

From here we drove/overnighted at the Parc National d'Aiguebelle. The plan for tomorrow is the Parc's Mont Dominant (Rouyn-Noranda CoHP).
