Ascent Trip ReportI made an afternoon ascent by car: having hiked Mt Elbert that morning I decided I had earned a drive-up! On reaching Cascade on US24 the Pikes Peak Highway is signposted from the main road. I paid $12 to drive to the summit-good value as a variety of good scenery is passed through on the way.
The highest point seemed to me to be the rock pile in the centre of the summit area (N38.84035 W105.04377, 4303m). There is a triangulation station (plaque) 15m to the NW (N38.84043 W105.04392). The summit area has been heavily modified and it is unclear where the natural highpoint would have been, although the bouldery area around the cairn at N38.84093 W105.04508 (4296m) seems a possible contender.
A couple of locals were wanting a lift down: they had taken the cog railway halfway up then hiked the remainder. I dropped them at Manitoba Springs then drove south on I-25 ready to climb Blanca Peak the next day.
