Ascent Trip ReportAttempted to reach the queen mine camp via US 6 in a 2WD rental car. Got to roughly 7600' (maybe higher) before the vegetation closed in and the road got rough. There was a small washout that we were unable to cross in our 2WD prius (yeah yeah). The low grown clearance was the primary problem. You might be able to make it in another 2WD car if a) it has a little more ground clearance and b) you don't mind scraping the bottom/sides.
We were squeamish about the potential to get stuck, or ripping off some expensive hybrid component off the bottom of the car on a wayward rock.
Being from the east coast we were disappointed to have to turn back, but adding the additional 2.5 miles each way plus a few thousand feet of gain would have put us out of our comfort zone (the highest point to park and not block the road was at roughly 7000'). We'll come back another time, or get it in conjunction with Whitney.
