Ascent Trip Report

After leaving Baxter peak, we followed the slightly protruding cairn tips along the plateau towards the north. It was only mildly windy but we were lost inside the clouds. I was very tired the whole way, and when we started ascending again on Hamlin's slopes, I almost gave up and waited for the others to come back down.

Pierre encouraged me to do otherwise as we were so close. I came in at the summit a little bit after everyone else, but I was glad I did so. I ate most of my snacks there and I was gaining more energy. When we left, I was renewed.

The way down was, again, lost in the clouds until we reached lower altitude. We had to navigate with compass so we would hit Abol Slide, which we did with minimal searching. The way down wasn't extremely hard. We met a group of hikers with a guide that were on their way up. They seemed ill equipped and their footing was unsure. They probably wouldn't go much further than the top of the slide as it was already later in the afternoon.

We got to the bottom of the slide and took a break there. Everyone was getting tired now, but it was still light and we were almost back to Abol Campground. A little while later, most of the group was setting camp at the lean-tos. Alain and I were going to hike back to Abol Bridge to sleep in cars. We left but I soon discovered I had forgotten Pierre's keys. I backtracked and got them, but it was too much ground to gain to catch up to Alain. When I reached the campground, he was dozing off in his car.

We went in town to get warm food and came back to the parking later for a good night's sleep.
