Ascent Trip Report

I drove up Catherine Canyon Road until I was on the southwst flank of White Mountain. It started a light rain, so I car camped for the night with the intention of hiking the peak in the morning. In the morning, it was raining heavily so I waited a couple hours for the rain to let up. When the rain slacked off, I started hiking up the slope. Then I heard thunder in the distance. I saw some flashes of lightning and counted to 11-12 before hearing thunder. I conntinued up the slope. More lightning, more thunder, closer lightning, more thunder, then the flash lightning and thunder within 3 seconds. I turned around and retreated to the truck. I got to the truck just in time. A very impressive thunderstorm with thunder following lightning about 1 second later. Torrential rains dumped for about 45 minutes and then it started to hail. Hail accumulated about an inch and showed no sign of abating. I was worried the road would wash out so I drove down the mountain in a severe hail and thunderstorm. The temperature dropped to 36 degrees. I came back 2 days later and hiked in good weather...
