Ascent of Jawbone Mountain on 2012-07-07

Climber: Richard Oestreicher

Date:Saturday, July 7, 2012
Ascent Type:Successful Summit Attained
Peak:Jawbone Mountain
    Location:USA-New Mexico
    Elevation:10593 ft / 3228 m

Ascent Trip Report

The forest road that runs from US64 to the west flank of the mountain was closed for elk calving season. We walked about 1.4 mi. in on the road to a spot sw of the peak where my GPS gave a distance to the hp of 0.9 mi. We bush whacked from there. Mostly easy going with meadows and not much underbrush or fallen trees in wooded areas. Some minor scrambling over rocks and boulders at the end. We then followed a GPS heading to the second peak, 10820. Again a fairly straightforward bushwhack, one fence hop, with a small piece on the forest road. A bit steeper towards the end than Jawbone.

Followed GPS heading back to our car at the highway. THis is an isolated area of high meadows with numerous small peaks.
