Ascent Trip Report

Find Kelly Camp which is just a jeep track into the woods near a stream crossing. The trail is unmarked and a little hard to see but it is just a few feet to the left of the stream. Unmaintained and the tread is fading but still no problem to follow at this point. A few down trees. Snow mostly gone. Hike it up until below the peak and when you have a nice grassy path just head up. We tagged the first summit and then angled slightly leftward to find a nice corridor through the trees to the other summit. Not sure which is higher just by line of sight as you can't exactly see between them. The GPS preferred the E summit. Some folks don't do this and if you had to guess you would say that it is not higher than either Diamond Peak or Oregon Butte. But I also don't think anyone really knows and if you want to be relatively sure of completing various peak lists this matters. The 6360+ contour contends for COHP, COGPP, wilderness HP and P2000 status depending on how it stacks up relative to OR Butte (Wilderness HP/P2000) and to West Diamond Peak (for all 4 lists). A serious survey of the 6360+ spots on Misery and West Diamond would seriously simplify the permutations for various peak lists. In any event, it is an easy and somewhat pleasant peak to hike anyway.
