Ascent Trip Report

I took FR485 next to the ski area (past the Arrowhead Lodge) up to an ATV track to my left just below 9300 feet. The ATV track dead ends in a couple of hundred yards.There are elements of a use trail to the left, but mostly it's just bushwhack. Quite steep most of the way (2000 feet elevation gain in 1.6 mi. e.g.average grade of about 25%). Lots of downed trees as well. Not a leisurely ascent.

I heard nearby thunder when I was at about 10900. I should have turned around but it's hard not to finish an ascent when you're close. The rain started about the time I hit the top, and it turned into a cloudburst about 10 minutes after I started down. With that much rain on a very steep slope the downed trees and rocks seemed like they were all ice covered. Several falls and slips left me with a variety of bruises. I felt lucky to get down in one piece. A lesson perhaps?
