Ascent Trip Report

To reach the trailhead for Viejas Mountain take Interstate 8 east from San Diego and exit at Tavern Road in Alpine. Go south for 0.1 mile to Alpine Blvd. and then turn left (east). After 0.7 miles come to a stop sign and turn left on Victoria Road. This will cross over I-8 and then turn east through a populated area. After 1.9 miles on this road turn left on Anderson Road which after 0.5 miles will come to a gate with a large water tank on your right. If the gate is open go another 0.3 miles on the dirt road to where it levels out and makes a turn downhill to the right. Park alongside the road here and look for a use trail on the east side which heads up through the brush. Follow this trail all the way up the mountain to the ridge top and north about another 0.25 miles to the summit which has several large stone walls evidently used as campsites. A register can is often located in the rocks near the primary benchmark. Hiking time is about 1 1/4 hours for the climb to the top and 1 hour back down. The elevation gain is 1500 ft. over a one-way distance of 1.3 miles. In the book "Afoot and Afield in San Diego County", 2nd ed., Jerry Schad gives a good description of the hike with some historical details as well. See pages 85-86. 5/95 RLC
