Ascent Trip ReportMount Watatic has been on my to-hike list for quite some time, and today (7/2/2012), I decided to hike it.
I arrived at the parking lot for Watatic, which is located off of MA 119, shortly before noon. I got my gear together (backpack with provisions and a camera), checked out the trailhead kiosks, and then set off on the Wapack Trail, which is cosigned with the Midstate Trail to the NH line.
The trail started out on a woods road, passing by a small pond in the early going. At about 0.1 to 0.2 miles, there was a junction. The trail to Watatic went right; therefore I went right.
After the junction, the trail had an easy to moderate grade for a little while, while passing through dark, shady woods. Soon after, though, it got steeper and a little more constant, and I found myself taking a few rest stops here and there.
After traversing the long and steep section, the trail's grade lessened. The woods thinned out a little, and some light shone down through it. There were stone walls all over the upper slopes of the mountain, and I'm pretty sure I crossed one. The trail soon made a left turn in front of a semi-obstructed viewpoint, which revealed a decent view of a few peaks in the area (my Massachusetts peak identification skills are very rusty).
There was one more major steep part, but it was short, and I eventually reached another junction. I continued straight uphill.
After passing by some unofficial trails and grassy areas, I reached the summit of Mount Watatic.
Watatic's summit is marked by a large cairn, an old fire tower base, and a stone marker a little downhill. The views were somewhat obstructed, but good. I rested for a few minutes before checking out the east peak.
