Ascent of Mount Hood on 2012-06-27| Date: | Wednesday, June 27, 2012 | | Ascent Type: | Successful Summit Attained | | Peak: | Mount Hood | | Location: | USA-Oregon | | Elevation: | 11239 ft / 3425 m |
Ascent Trip ReportAfter days of inaccurate weather reports and the promise of a small window of opportunity, we pushed up to 9400 in a whiteout and set up camp. By the gods, the sky cleared at 11:00 PM and we made our successful push to the summit at 5:00 AM.
The weather was initially cold - perfect conditions for the Old Chute - Right Variant. It was steep and required careful single/double tooling. Some even had to rappel down!
The descent was uneventful, but temperatures increased and the snow became slush.
The morale of the story: don't trust weather models and forecasts for the Pacific Northwest.
